Mo's Bacon Bar by Vosges Haut-Chocolat

We were invited to attend Norton Lilly's Holiday Celebration at the New York Yacht Club a couple of days ago. It was quite an experience, since the New York Yacht Club is a very exclusive club and no way would we have had the opportunity to even step foot in it without an invitation from one of it's members. The cocktail/dinner was held in the Model Room and I must say, the room itself was rather breathtaking. Hundreds of model ships lined the walls of that room. It is said that the Model Room holds the record for the largest collection of model ships in the world! We had a great time meeting various people from the maritime industry but the highlight of the night (well, at least mine :P) was the door gift that we got. Check it out!
Mo's Bacon Bars! We have heard so much about it but never got around to trying it. Come on, how can you go wrong with two of the best things in the world? Bacon and chocolate...mmmm mmmm mmmmm! :D However, bacon and chocolate together? Hmmm, I don't know but we were pretty stoked to try it! We first heard of Mo's Bacon Bars from Marc Summer's Unwrapped, the TV show from The Food Network. It seems the creator of this chocolate bar graduated from Vanderbilt and went on to attend the famous Le Cordon Blue in Paris. Upon completion, she traveled the world, learning about various indigenous cuisines and cultures. After her return, she founded Vosges Haut-Chocolat with the concept of 'Travel the World through Chocolate'. She is known to combine high quality luxury chocolate with all kinds of spices, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits, nuts and the obscure.
So, what is Mo's Bacon Bar actually? Is there really bacon mixed into the chocolate bar? Yes, there is! It's basically a huge solid bar (divided into 8 pieces) of deep milk chocolate with bits and pieces of Applewood smoked bacon and just a sprinkling of Alderwood salt. When we first opened the packaging, the first thing to hit us was the smell! It really smelled like bacon! However, I am not sure if it's a good thing or not. The smell somewhat reminded me of Abby's (Kevin's dog) bacon flavored beggin strips or some really old and stale bacon bits. Seriously, the smell was rather overpowering.
So, what does it taste like? Truthfully? Well, bacon bits mixed with chocolate :P As you can see from the cross section of the chocolate bar, there are really huge chunks of bacon bits in the chocolate bar. It also has a crunch to it. The chocolate tasted heavenly. You can tell right away that it's high quality chocolate. However, I find the mix of the salty bacon and sweet chocolate a tad bit weird. Don't get me wrong, I love the concept of combining chocolate and bacon together. I know that the combination of those two items work. It's just that I feel that maybe she needs a little adjustment to the taste of the bacon. There is just something not right about it. Maybe the flavor is too strong or it is a little too salty. I can't place my finger on what the problem is exactly but the bacon's aftertaste wasn't really pleasant. Because of that, I think that Mo's Bacon Bar failed to hit a home run in my books. It's unfortunate though, cos I firmly believe that with the right combination of taste, flavor and texture, this product could potentially be a huge hit.

Free Chocolate Dipped Fruit Boxes!!

Before I begin, I have to say that this is not a paid post. It's just something really cool that we would like to share with our readers :D I found out from a forum last Thursday that Edible Arrangements was giving away $1.5 million dollars worth of chocolate dipped fruit boxes (100,000 boxes) on their Facebook page. All we needed to do was to fill up a form and they will email us the coupon for the free fruit box. I have heard of Edible Arrangements and I've always wanted to try their products, but it's a bit on the expensive side. So, this is a good chance for me to see if it's any good or worth the money.

I received this coupon in my mailbox the very next day! Looks like I had the option to either print it out and take it to the nearest Edible Arrangements store to pick it up or I could redeem it online and get them to deliver the fruit boxes to my apartment (we just have to pay the shipping charges). We decided to print it out and head over to the Edible Arrangements in Nutley, NJ (about 10 minutes away from us) yesterday.

We found the shop without any problems and since there is a huge municipal parking lot behind the shop, there wasn't any parking problems too. It's located on Franklin Ave, the main town center of Nutley.

The store front was clean, neat and they had quite a lot of their products on display. It's pretty cool to actually see them in real life, since I have only visited their website and not thier store front. Now I know the actual size of the arrangements and stuff. The staff was also super friendly. When we gave them our coupons, they were really nice and told to wait for a bit while they prepare our fruit boxes at the back. You know how some stores would treat you differently if you walk in with a free coupon and are not a 'paying customer'? Well, not here! They were super nice and very professional :D

After waiting for about 5 minutes or so, the lady came out with an Edible Arrangements bag and told us that she has included 2 coupons for $4 off, for our next visit! How nice =) I was also pretty impressed with the packaging. I was expecting them to just hand us two boxes and that's it. There was a little card and a full glossy brochure, tied with a golden string, attached to the paper bag. Very nice. Wanna see what's inside?

Here is it! The 6 piece Chocolate Dipped Fruit Box (worth $15). I just love the packaging, with the bright red high quality box and a brown ribbon around it. So, what does the fruits look like?

Isn't it nice?? The coupon didn't specify what type of fruits we will be getting but it says on the website that it's up to the shop to decide - it could be strawberries, apples, oranges, bananas, pineapples or pears. We had some strawberries, apples and bananas. Is it worth $2.50 a piece? Well, all I can say is that it tasted really really good. You can taste that the chocolate is high quality chocolate and the fruits were really fresh. $2.50 for a piece of fruit is a little bit steep, but if you were to give it as a gift, I think that it's worth it. The whole presentation is really nice and it helps that the chocolate taste great too! Overall, we were really impressed with the professionalism of the staff, the packaging as well as taste of the product. Thank you Edible Arrangements for our two free boxes of Chocolate Dipped Fruits. We really enjoyed it!

* To get the coupon for your free box of 6 piece Chocolate Dipped Fruit Boxes, head over to http://facebook.com/dofruit . I believe the promotion runs til middle of November or til they hit 100,000 boxes (whichever comes first).

Microwave Milo Mug Cake

Somebody passed me this recipe a while ago but I never got around to trying it out. It seemed way too easy to be good and I was pretty sure that it would turn out yucky :P We felt like eating cake a few weeks ago but we were too lazy to go out to get some. So, I decided to try this recipe out. I must say I was pleasantly surprised! It turned out to be really good. The cake was moist and tasted greaatt! The best thing was..it only took about 10 mins in total to make! Here's how you make it.

First, you would need a tall microwaveable mug/cup. It will overflow if the mug/cup is not tall enough. Spray the inside of the mug with some non stick vegetable oil.

Measure in about 4 tbsp of flour.

Then add in about 4 tbsp of Milo. If you do not want to use Milo, you can use any type of chocolate powder that you like.

This is then followed by 4 tbsp of sugar.

Mix everything together well.

Next, crack in one egg.

Then, add in 3 tbsp of milk.

Measure in about 3 tbsp of oil

Pour in some semi sweet chocolate chips and mix everything together.

This is how it should look like once you have mixed everything together well.

Pop it into the microwave for about 3 minutes on high.

This is how it looks like after 3 minutes in the microwave. See how nicely the cake has risen up. Oh, it smells great too, by the way :P

Give the mug/cup a few good shakes and it should slide out without any problems.

This is good for two servings. I cut the cake into two and served it up with a dollop of whipped cream. It would taste yummy too if it was served up with some vanilla ice cream. It's amazing how something so yummy could be made in such a short time and all you need is some basic ingredients, a mug and a microwave!

Max Brenner - Union Square, NYC

Like I mentioned earlier in my post about Jaya Restaurant, we were in the city last weekend to meet up with an old friend from Uni. After our lunch in Chinatown, we headed to Max Brenner in Union Square. There are two Max Brenner's in NYC, the other is located in the East Village. I've always thought that Max Brenner was an Australian chocolate chain that specializes in chocolate drinks and desserts but I just found out that it's actually Israeli! Can't really blame me, there are 13 outlets in Australia and only 6 in Israel. They also have branches in the Philippines, Singapore and two outlets here in the States (both in Manhattan).

The place looked pretty packed when we walked in. The wonderful smell of chocolate just hits you the moment you walk in. The Chocolate Shop (gift shop) was on our right and Chocolate Bar was in front of us. In the Chocolate Shop you can find the very chocolaty Max Brenner Truffle Cream, Pralines, Pastries, Cookies as well as their famous "Hug Mug" and other glasses/mugs/cups. We could also see some of their famous Chocolate Pizza and other chocolate goodies on display at the Chocolate Bar.

The waitress led us to the second level of the two level cafe. We were handed tow menus each, one for food and the other for drinks and desserts. Everything on the menu looked so good! I think this was the longest time I ever took to look through the menu to decide on what to order!

Kevin ordered the Chocolate Chai ($4.50), a chai spice blend infused with hot white chocolate truffle. It comes with a piece of biscotti by the side. I just love the presentation of the drink. You are supposed to put the pot on top of the glass and press down. It will then dispense the Chocolate Chai into the glass. Cool huh?

I felt like having a Choctail, so I ended up ordering the Dark Chocolate Granita ($6.75). It's pure dark chocolate truffle blended with ice. It was served in their famous Alice Cup. The Chocolate Granita also comes in Milk and White chocolate. For a dollar extra, you could add in a shot of either Raspberry, Coconut, Cinnamon, Mint, Hazelnut or Banana flavoring. I didn't want to do that, the original flavor was yummy enough. So chocolicious!!

Our friend Harayz ordered their signature Hot Chocolate ($4.95), served in a Hug Mug. It is also known as the Cappuccino of Chocolate. I believe he chose the Milk Chocolate, with hints of vanilla.

We wanted to share something for dessert but there we just so many things to choose from! From Waffles to Crepes to Chocolate Pizzas! At last, we also ordered a portion of Vanilla Profiterole Fondue Skewers ($11.25). The profiteroles (served on skewers) were filled with vanilla cream. They were accompanied by a bowl of crunchy wafer balls as well as a portion of milk chocolate fondue and vanilla sauce for dipping. Mmmmmm mmm mmmmm, they were really really good.

We had a great time catching up with Harayz and the drinks as well dessert in Max Brenner totally rocks! I would definitely go back to try their Chocolate Pizza and maybe some other items from their food menu. The chocolate in Max Brenner is just so so so delicious and yummy. I think I have fallen in love with the "Chocolate by the Bald Man" :P
