Gifts from the Marlboro Ranch (Summer '09)

One of the most asked question after we got back from the ranch was..."So apart from cigarettes, what else did you guys get from from Ranch?". Well, we expected free cigarettes (which we have generously donated to some of Kevin's friends), a cowboy hat and boots (cos we had to give our hat size and shoe size a few weeks before we left for the ranch). Little did we know that there were many many other gifts waiting for us at the Ranch. Oh before I forget, contrary to popular belief, no, there is no free flow of cigarettes at the ranch. Each person is given 5 packs (see pic below) and they could redeem another extra pack at the Saloon or Livery. So each person gets 6 packs. I think that is MORE than enough for a 4 days 3 nights trip. If that's not enough for you, I think you seriously need to seek some professional help.
Here is a photo of some of the gifts that we got the moment we arrived. Many people in various forums commented that we should not ruin the 'surprise' by revealing the gifts that we get. Well, I don't know about you but I am generally a curious person and I would want to know what I will be getting before arriving at the Ranch. So, if you don't want to ruin that surprise, stop reading now. For the rest of you, here are all the gifts that you will be getting from the Ranch.

First up is head gear. We received the black caps with the Crazy Mountain Ranch logo about two weeks prior to the trip. It came with the plane tickets and other travel documents. It was really handy at the airport, it helped us pick out all the other people from the crowd, who were also going to the Ranch. The other is of course the cowboy hat. I'm not familiar with 'cowboy apparel', but from what I read, it's a pretty decent hat. The style is called Cowboy (Model #0575) and it's made by Stetson. The quality is also pretty good, it's a 5X felt quality. I also found out online that those hats don't come cheap. It was going for about $170 a piece!! Since they already sent us a cowboy hat measuring tape one month prior to the trip, the hat fits pretty good most of the time. If it doesn't fit, you can always exchange it for another size at the Activity Barn. Another cool thing about the cowboy hats is that they have people who can shape the hats for you. Kevin got his hat shaped to the style of how Garth Brooks would wear his hat and I got mine shaped to a more feminine style (something like what Shania Twain or Faith Hill would wear).

We've got the cowboy hat, of course we would need cowboy boots too! We each got a very nice pair of cowboy boots by Resistol Ranch. I am not sure what the style is but the Ladies Model # is M0504 and Men is M0016. I have never owned or worn a pair of cowboy boots before but I must say that they are very very comfortable. I wore it for the Scenic Horseback Ride as well as to the Street Party and every Evening/Night activity. Really comfortable. A little note to all city kids (like me), cowboy boots works great on the dance floor! Seriously, you can just slide all over the place with ease :P Maybe I should start wearing cowboy boots out clubbing!

The winner of the trip (that's me!) will also receive a Samsung S760 7.2MP digital camera. It comes with a 1GB memory card, camera case, rechargeable batteries and a battery charger. I have not tried using it (since we brought our trusty Nikon S610), but from the review I read online, it looks like a pretty decent camera. My sister Ashley is pretty excited cos we told her that she can have it! :D

We each also received a hard cover "Morning Fires, Evening Lights - The Marlboro Country Cookbook" book. I flipped through it real fast the other day and it's loaded with lots of recipes. You can expect me to try some of them and share it here really soon!! Of course, we also both got a nice red bandanna. All cowboys (cowgirls too!) need a red bandanna :P Moving on...

They also gave us two really nice and heavy ashtrays with the Crazy Mountain Ranch logo on it and also two Portable Litter Device (PLD). I initially didn't know what it was, I thought its some sort of lighter or something. Kevin had to explain to me that it's used to store cigarette butts and ash when they is no ashtray around. Now I know :P

It was good of them to also include two nice water bottles as part of the gifts. It came in handy for people who wanted to bring water for their activities and stuff. The two cans you see in front of the water bottles is a poker set (minus the chips). There is a deck of cards, dice and a booklet, teaching you how to play poker. Nice!

We also got a pair of Bolle sunglasses each. It is the Coachwhip model with Soft Black TNS Lenses. Looks pretty cool actually but we both brought our own sunglasses, so we didn't really test them out. It's currently still in the box, together with the microfiber carrying case and sunglasses strap. I don't think they are cheap sunglasses, I checked the RRP online and it was almost $100!!

This is a very nice gift. It's a Swiss Army Dual Time Travel Alarm Clock by Victorinox ( Model: 24731). It looks like a pocket watch and the black cover doubles up as a stand. It's basically a clock and the second time zone can be set on the outer ring. You can also find the 24 hour military time imprinted on the inner ring on the dial. I believe it retails for about $80 each.

We were also given three types of luggage each. The huge roller travelling bag was sent to us about 2 weeks before we left for the trip. It's a really nice bag - huge with lots of pockets. We were also given a backpack each. Also really nice with lots of pockets and anti slip straps. The small black bag in front is a waist pouch with a tiny compass and thermometer. You can slip it on your belt and take it with you when you go for your activities. Really good for carrying your camera, keys or cigarettes (if you smoke).

You must be thinking...wow, so many things! Well, there is more! We were also given one red t shirt (for the group picture) and two different jackets each (one lightweight and one heavier jacket). The heavier jacket is actually an original Oilskin Coat by Outback Trading Co. Ltd (Style #: 6085). Oilskin Coats are traditionally worn by cowboys or ranchers, becos it is waterproof and really heavy duty. The coat is black in color and has corduroy trims. Very very nice for guys but I think it's a tad bit too masculine for the ladies. Oh well, its a nice coat none the less. They also added a Crazy Mountain Ranch pin at the collar of the coat...nice! :D

The other jacket is a Columbia nylon lightweight waterproof jacket (Model: Canyon Creek II). I just love this jacket. It's really comfortable and I like the color combination (the picture doesn't do justice). It also comes with an attached hood.

Marlboro also wants you to take home as many memories of the ranch as possible with you. Hence, they also gave us two leather photo albums (pre loaded with a few photos of the ranch) and two leather address books. They also pre printed our names and contact details on little stickers, so that we can exchange them with our new friends that we made at the ranch. How cool is that?

The last thing that we got were Zippo lighters. We were given a few feedback forms to fill in during the last night and when we handed them in together with our room key on the last day, we got the Zippos as a token of appreciation for filling out those forms. Boy, so apart from getting a free trip to the Crazy Mountain Ranch, we also came back to loads of gifts from Marlboro! Great activities, great ranch staff, great gifts and great food...hmm, great food. Wanna know what Marlboro fed us throughout the 4 days and 3 nights? That will be coming up in the next post! Stay tuned :P

WaiverWire - for the football fan in your life!

Do you have a husband, son, brother, uncle or boyfriend that is a huge football fan? Well, I do. Kevin is a football fanatic! Now that football season is just about to begin, I have to brace myself to be a football 'widow' once again. Yes, I am also an avid football (Steelers, to be exact) fan, but I'm not that into it as him. Maybe it's a guy thing. Not only does he watch a lot of football, but he also loves his Fantasy Football. He would spend hours talking to his buddies about football and sit in front of the computer all night, just to catch up on all the football news.
I recently came to know about WaiverWire and I told my husband about it. He just loves that website! What is WaiverWire? Well, it is a brand new site where that football loving man in your life can go to read up about all things related to fantasy football. The site is created by a bunch of former Wall Street guys who have a passion for football. They were fed up with the financial markets, so, they got together and built this incredible website for fantasy football players! What they did was to use the format, tools and techniques for analyzing stocks and applied them to NFL player and fantasy football team analysis. How cool is that?
WaiverWire.com has everything Kevin needs to win his fantasy league in one place. There is a Fantasy football draft software, which world’s only draft tool with artificial intelligence. Also, he can get all the football news, analysis and do as must research as he possibly can on that site. Not only that, but there is also forum where he can go to discuss football with the other users of WaiverWire. If that is not enough, he can also get access to over 100 Local NFL team news feeds, fantasy football rankings as well as fantasy football player comparisons. There is just so much information on WaiverWire. Kevin really loves this site and I know that football fan in your life will love it too. Now that Kevin knows about WaiverWire, maybe this will give him that extra edge and he can now whoop his buddies butts in fantasy football! :D Now that the pre-season has started, hurry up and check out WaiverWire.com. You wouldn't want to be left behind when the real season starts!

Our Room at the Ranch

The motorcoach finally stopped in front of the Stage Stop and all 16 of us hopped out excitedly! We were greeted by the friendly smiling faces of the Ranch staff and they ushered us inside. The Stage Stop is one of the main buildings in town. You can head over there to change your activities (either add on, switch around or remove) and it's also the pick up point for some of the activities, like the Backcountry Jeep Tour, Fly Fishing, Clay Shooting and Off Roading. This is basically where you go to if you need any help during your entire stay. As usual, you can get unlimited supply of water, Powerade, coffee and snacks there too.

After a short "do's and don'ts" briefing by the Ranch Security, we checked in and got our room keys. Our room was Gallatin, in the Rock Creek Bank building. All the rooms in the Bank are named after famous people who helped write history, like former Presidents and Frontiersmen.

One of the Ranch staff brought us to our building. It was just a few buildings away from the Stage Stop actually. The good thing about staying in the Bank is that it's located at the edge of town, so it's not too noisy and there are higher chances of us spotting wildlife from our rooms or the balcony. We can also get a great view of the sunset from here.

The lobby of the Rock Creek Bank looks exactly like errrr a Bank? :P The moment you walk in, there is an old fashion bank teller counter. You can go behind the counter and check out all the cool old fashion typewriters, registers and other stuff that you can find in a Bank.

There is also a huge vault door that is at the entrance leading to the rooms on the ground floor. There is a little bit of history behind those doors. This was the original vault door that was installed in the Montana State Capitol Building in Helena (state capital of Montana) back in 1900. It used to guard the State's payroll vault in the State Auditor's office for 97 years. It was moved to the Crazy Mountain Ranch back in 2000 and it's been here ever since. Cool huh? :D

Our room is located on the second floor. I just love all the original photographs and bank notes that line the walls along the stairway, leading upstairs.

There is a comfortable and cosy sitting room on the second floor landing. This is where you can make calls for free back home to your family, anywhere in the United States. Since there are no cell phone signals anywhere on the Ranch and no Internet or WiFi, it's really good that you get free calls to check back with the folks back home!

At last we are at our room. The moment we opened the door, this is what we saw on the bed! All kinds of gifts from Marlboro! Wow! There were cowboy hats, boots, 2 types of jackets, a t shirt, a bandanna, sunglasses, a Swiss Army pocket watch, waist pouch with a tiny compass, water container, a Marlboro hard cover cook book, an ashtray, a portable ashtray, some packs of cigarettes and a Samsung 7.2MP digital camera! How cool is that??? I will blog in detail about all the gifts we got from Marlboro during the trip in a whole separate post.

Here are some of the pictures that we took of the room. I just love the decor. It has this country/ranch old fashioned charm to it.

My favorite part of the room is the bathroom. Check it out! There is also a clawfoot bathtub in every room. The Crazy Horse Ranch is said to have the largest collection of clawfoot bathtubs in the whole nation. It's the first time I've actually seen a clawfoot bathtub up close, let alone shower in one. Waaayyyyy coool!

There is also a huge balcony with old fashioned rocking chairs and side tables. Check out the spit bucket...there are many of those all over the Ranch. It's actually used more for people to stub out their cigarettes instead of spitting :P The balcony is also a great place to look out for wildlife (we spotted many deer and one night, I swear I saw a wolverine too). Since the Bank is located at the edge of town, you can also get a great straight on view of the sunset from the balcony too.

Well, this wraps with the grand tour of our room at the ranch. Stay tuned for the next post. I'll be blogging about all the gifts that we got during our trip. Marlboro totally rocks! :D

SellingBin - Instantly Sell Your Electronics

In this day and age, modern day technology is changing at such a rapid pace. Each day, there will be some new gadgets and gizmo's being introduced to the market. Many people (myself included) are always looking for the latest 'toy' that we can buy and upgrade to. We are constantly upgrading our electronics to better and more advance models. Since I bought my very first cell phone when I was in college, I have lost count of the amount of cell phones I went through til today. So, what would I do with all those used, old, unwanted and broken electronic devices? Nothing really. I would just chuck them away in boxes or some drawer and just let it sit there and collect dust. I'm pretty sure many of you know what I am talking about. What else can I do with all that old stuff, right?
Well, wrong! I recently came to know about SellingBin.com. SellingBin is a way for you to instantly sell your used, old, unwanted, and broken electronic devices. They buy all kinds of laptops, cell phones, digital cameras, video games, gaming consoles and more! So how do they do it and how does it work? Well, firstly, you have to complete the appropriate form for your item. Once that is done, they will search for your quote from a network of buyers looking for exactly the type of product you are selling. The buying quotes (an offer, shipping and payment information) are then emailed directly to you. Their service enables multiple buyers to view the product details so that you will get the best possible quote. All quotes are delivered to you within 48 hours. How cool is that?
So, the next time you have any unwanted, used or broken electronics just sitting around, head over to SellingBin.com to get an instant offer for all your electronic stuff. Remember, your 'trash' might earn you some cash.

Our Journey to the Ranch

I know many of you are awaiting to hear about our trip to Montana. For those of you who don't know, we won a fully paid trip to the Crazy Mountain Ranch, sponsored by Philip Morris. It was one of the best 4 days 3 nights of our lives! We had a chance to experience the cowboy/cowgirl life out in the wild wild west for those 4 days, amidst taking in all the beautiful scenery that Montana had to offer. In the next few days, we will be blogging solely about the trip (hang in there if you are here for the recipes and other stuff that we usually blog about). So sit back and take a ride with us, as we bring you inside Marlboro's Crazy Mountain Ranch!

We left our apartment at 3:30am in the morning, cos our plane leaves La Guardia at 7am. It was a pleasant 50 min drive to La Guardia, really funny to drive thru the city at this hour. The funny thing is, Times Square was filled with people, like how it would be at say, 10pm. I guess NYC is truly a city that never sleeps :P Since we checked in online earlier in the day (we flew United all the way) at home and already have our boarding passes, we just needed to check in our luggage (it's $20 per bag if you check in at the airport but only $15 per bag is you do so and pre pay at home). The flight to O'Hare in Chicago was uneventful but all the 'fun' began in Chicago. I will not go into details in this post (it's so stupid, I would need a whole new post dedicated to that), but our flight to Bozeman was delayed for close to 5 hours! Let's just say the whole plane cheered when the plane finally took off from O'Hare.

After such a long long day, we were so glad to see this out from our plane window. Yup, that's rite! The Bridger Range! It's part of the Rocky Mountains and it separates Bozeman and Clyde Park (where the Ranch is located). The view from the plane was just breathtaking, the beautiful blue skies, the vast plains and the rocky mountains. I guess it's "Welcome to Montana!".

Upon arrival, we realized that the Bozeman airport is really really small. There were only 5 gates but I just loved the decor of the airport. It had a wildlife influenced theme, reminds me somewhat of the airport in Anchorage. We saw a few cowboys in red shirts and tan hats, standing arms akimbo with big smiles, waiting for us the moment we got out from the plane. Yup, those were the friendly guest relations staff from the Ranch!
They told us not to worry about our luggage, they will take care of it. The next time we will see our luggage will be in our room, at the Ranch! How cool is that? :D They then brought us to a special room that had a "Private Party" sign out front. Yup, that's when the party begin...and it went on for 4 whole days!

We had to fill in some forms and once that's done, we could help ourselves to some pre packed lunch/snacks and chill for a little. We had a choice of BBQ Chicken Pitas or Ham Pitas. Of course we could take both if we wanted...lots to go around! In the box was also some chips, potato salad, some dessert and a huge yummy chocolate chip cookie.

Once we were done with our food, we piled into a huge motor coach for the 1 hour ride from Bozeman to the Crazy Mountian Ranch. Of course (in true Marlboro style), there were more food/snacks and drinks for us in the motor coach. I was a really pleasant ride in the big windows motor coach. The scenery was just breathtaking, with the rolling mountains and beautiful countryside. We even crossed over the Yellowstone River a few times. Jimbo, one of the guest relation staff made the ride interesting by pointing out interesting sights and telling us all about Montana and the Ranch.

After about 45 minutes or so on the bus, the motor coach pulled off the main road and we saw the famous Crazy Mountain Ranch gates. Yes, the Ranch is real...it's not some urban legend made up marketing people from Marlboro :P After clearing security (yes, security is tight here at the ranch), we were finally in! As we made our way down the road, the Marlboro theme song (theme from Magnificent 7) came on. With the Crazy Mountains ahead of us, whip cracking cowboys on horseback riding beside the motor coach and as we watch the town slowly emerge from the horizon, it was definitely a surreal experience. I found a short vid on YouTube, showing the cowboys riding next to the motor coach. Pretty cool huh?

What a welcome to the Crazy Mountain Ranch. From that point, it just gets better and better. Lots of food, fun activities and gifts! Stay tuned to see what our room looks like (and also what we found in our room!!)...it rocks! :D

Happy Birthday, Mom!!

I find myself wondering...
Did I give you your due..
For all that you've done for me
Did I ever thank you?
For all of my childhood memories
For helping me deal with life's stresses
For helping me accept my defeats
And celebrate my successes?
Or for teaching me the value of hard work,
Good judgement, courage, and being true
The laughter, smiles, and quiet times we've shared
Did I ever thank you?
If I have forgotten,
I'm thanking you now
You taught me right from wrong....
I hope you know how much you're loved and appreciated
I hope you, instinctively, knew all along.
Happy 54th Birthday Mom!!
xoxo

The "Pearls" of Switzerland

I think it's no secret that Kevin and I both enjoy travelling. We have pretty much travelled all over Asia as well as visited many places all over America. Yes, Kevin has been to quite a lot of places in Europe during his sailing days but I've only been to Amsterdam. Therefore, we would most likely visit Europe for our next 'big' vacation. Switzerland is one of our 'must visit' countries if we ever visit Europe. Why Switzerland? Well, apart from it being synonymous with the Alps, Switzerland is home to dramatic landscapes, quaint country settings as well as historic castles and villages. With cultural influences, including French, German and Italian, it is filled with heritage and culture abound.

Switzerland has a lot of 'pearls' that are left to be discovered by every traveler. Pearls or experiences that are unique and found only in Switzerland. Here are my top 5 favorite picks.

1) A hotel (hi)story for gourmets - A culinary journey back in time at Switzerland’s largest hotel museum, the seven-room show culminates in the most magnificent spread. Narrated in seven courses with seven different wines, the 132-year-old history of the Hotel Waldhaus in Flims stimulates both mind and palate.

2) Riding and dining through Lucerne - An extravagant tour in a horse-drawn coach has everything the gourmet could wish for, whether it’s a classic fondue, a zesty Raclette or meat barbecued to a crisp at your seat. The exceptionally romantic route taken through this legendary city of lights, it's a two hour tour of Lucerne, at its finest.

3) A day in the vineyards - Spend a day helping with the vendemmia – the grape harvest – which naturally includes partaking in the conviviality of a communal lunch. Vintners in the Mendrisiotto and the Basso Ceresio are only too happy to share this experience with interested guests.

4) My first 4000-m-high peak - Climbing a 4000-m-high peak is an experience many an amateur mountaineer dreams of. Your mountain guide will tell you what to expect the evening before. Then, after a good night’s rest, you will set off early in the morning, climbing from 3454 m to 4027 m in just two to three hours. The ascent of the Allalinhorn is not too long and those who make the effort are rewarded with fantastic panoramic views.

5) Ghost walk through Zurich - Those who love horror movies can get to know the creepier side of Zurich by going on a ghost walk with Dan Dent. Blood-curdling stories of the city’s violent past and tales of the many spooks and poltergeists that still haunt some of the gloomier streets are sure to generate a pleasantly titillating sense of horror, despite the seemingly picturesque backdrop.

Sounds interesting and fun? This are only a handful of the many things you can experience in Switzerland! Do you want to know more? Discover Swiss "Pearls" at their website today!!
