I was looking for more fried chicken places to check out around our area when I found out that there is a Chicken Galore in Kearny! Woohoo! We were so excited that we went to get dinner from there that evening itself.
It's not as big and busy as the one in Woodbridge. In fact, the Chicken Galore in Kearny is really tiny. Just a huge counter to order and a few chairs to sit and wait for your food. The plus point about the Chicken Galore in Kearny is that since it's not that busy, they only fry up your chicken when you place your order. So, you will get fresh chicken every time! Because of that, the wait is super long. We soon realized that and noticed that the regular customers would call ahead of time to order and then would only come to pick it up about 20 minutes later. We should do that the next time! :D
We printed out a coupon online for the 10 piece dark meat special with a large tub of mash potatoes ($11.95). We also ordered an extra side of sweet potato fries ($3.55). They have a really large menu with a whole lot of things to choose from. Apart from fried chicken, they also have ribs, fish n chips, buffalo wings, crab cakes, fried shrimp, clams, scallops as well as fried vegetables. If you are not looking for a full meal, they also have a lot of snack choices like pierogies, mozz sticks, jalapeno poppers, deep fried mac n cheese, fried ravioli, deep fried oreos, fried apple turnover and a host of other yummy snacks.
Here is a close up of the chicken. The batter is very dark red, almost brown. Yes, the chicken was exactly how we remembered it to be. Soo soooo goood. I don't know what's in the batter, but it's really good. Crispy on the outside, juicy in the inside. Also, it's not oily at all. How good is good? Well, I think it's a very very close second to Popeyes. Kevin thinks it's better than Popeyes. In fact, he likes it so much he wants to bring the franchise back to Pittsburgh! :P
The sweet potato fries was good too. However, the mash potatoes was a letdown. The potatoes tasted like it's one of those instant powdered potatoes from a box and the gravy was watery, too salty and tasted weird. I guess we will have to remember not to order the mash potatoes again the next time. Chicken Galore is open 7 days a week and they deliver too! I must say that their fried chicken is really good. So far, it's in the top running on our list for the best fried chicken in Northern NJ.
