Luggage Sets from CSN Stores!!

Boy, I just love the holiday season. Don't you? We just got back from Pittsburgh a couple of days ago after spending Thanksgiving weekend with Kevin's side of the family. How did you guys spend Thanksgiving this year? Had some quality time with the family? Ate a lot of turkey? Did you manage to do some shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Since we were in Pittsburgh, we didn't really get a chance to shop much this Thanksgiving.

For those of you who missed out on those two huge shopping days (just like us!), fret not. There are many places still offering awesome deals from now til Christmas. What we really need is some new luggage. I have been telling myself that we should take advantage of all the sales going on during Thanksgiving to buy ourselves a new set. However, we never got around to it. We still have quite a lot of traveling to do this coming Christmas holidays, so we REALLY need some new luggage...now.
I was surfing the internet earlier this morning and came across some amazing deals from CSN Stores for luggage sets. How perfect! There were just so many different sets to choose from, I didn't know where to begin. They come in all kinds of colors, makes and sizes, it's crazy! The best part is, they are all on sale!! After going through all of the sets (trust me, there are a LOT to choose from), I shortlisted a few that I really like. I totally love the vibrant colors of the Britto Collection by Heys USA as well as the the Zebra print 4 piece set by Rockland. Another 4 piece set that I really like is the Large Dot 4 Wheeled set by International Traveller. Just love the pink,black and white color combo. The original price for that set is $900 but it is now going for only $382.99! What a good deal!

As much as I love all the vibrant girly pattern and colors, Kevin is more of a practical kind of guy. He likes the 7 piece set by American Trunk and Case. The set includes a 27" Expandable Upright, a 20" Expandable Carry-On, a 16" Duffle, a 42" Garment Sleeve, a Tri-fold Organizer, a Drawstring Laundry Bag and a 3-1-1 Travel Pouch. Guess how much it is going for now? You won't believe it. The whole 7 piece set is going for $99.99! Yup, ALL THAT for only $99.99!! Oh boy, I am so torn. Should I get this practical and value for money 7 piece set or should I go with one of those bright colored and really pretty sets? What do you think?

Pan Fried Jack Daniel's Steak

I've been cooking steaks with this Jack Daniel's marinade for the longest time but I never got around to blogging about it. I must say that this marinade is totally awesome! Not only is it really simple to whip up but it has this really full flavor that both Kevin and I love. Whenever we cook up steaks using this recipe, I swear that you can smell it all the way down the hall of our apartment building. Yeah, it smells that great! Alrighty, so here's how we make pan fried steaks with the uber delicious Jack Daniel's marinade.
I believe that the cut/type of steak is really important if you want yummy juicy steaks. Don't try to skimp by buying cheap cuts of steaks. They won't usually turn out that great, no matter how well you cook them. Here we have two 10 oz strip steaks from Omaha Steaks. Look at all the marbling. Mmm mmm good! I just love Omaha Steaks, they are the best :D Allow the steaks to fully thaw (if they are frozen) and poke tiny holes all over the steaks. Then, set it aside.
Now it's time to make some marinade! Pour in some Worcestershire sauce to some Balsamic Vinaigrette. Make sure that you mix it well.
Then, add in a few squeezes of lemon juice followed by some freshly cracked black pepper.
Finally, add in a few pegs of Jack Daniel's whiskey. Both Kevin and I love Jack Daniel's, so we always have a bottle of that at home :P Now, mix everything together and it's done! Take a small whiff of the marinade. Doesn't it smell just great? Boy, best marinade ever! :D
Save about 1/3 of the marinade for the sauce later on. Place the steaks into a Ziploc bag and pour the remaining 2/3 of the sauce into it. Massage the steaks a little and pop it into the refrigerator for at least 8 hours. I usually just let it sit in the refrigerator for about 24 hours or so.
When you are ready to cook up the steaks, here's what you do. Lightly spray some cooking oil onto a pan. Once the pan is heated up, place the steaks in it. Allow it to sear on one side and then just flip it over. Do not be afraid to allow the steaks to char a little. I always love the tiny burnt bits! Cooking time varies depending on how well you want the steaks to be. We usually cook ours to about medium well. Once your steaks are done, remove them from the pan and set aside.
Time to make the sauce! Using the same pan, add in some onions. You could also add in some sliced mushrooms if you like. Saute it a little until it becomes soft, Then, add in the 1/3 of marinade that we saved earlier. The marinade will nicely deglaze your pan. Make sure you get all the yummy burnt bits off, they are just soooo good! Once your sauce begins to simmer, turn down the heat a little and it will begin to thicken. With that, the sauce is done. Pour the sauce over your steaks and it's ready to eat! I served up the steaks with some sweet potato fries and steamed broccoli. Mmmm mmmm mmmm...it always hits the spot, every time!

Involtini di Melanzane (Rolled Eggplant Bundles)

I had some eggplant left over from making Eggplant Parmesan the other day, so I went online to look for some new eggplant recipes to try out. I found a rather interesting recipe called Involtini di Melanzane. It's basically rolled eggplant with pasta stuffing. I've never heard of this dish before, let alone tried it. So, I was pretty psyched to try it out. It turned out to be really good and I'll definitely make this for dinner again in the very near future. I'm not sure if it's authentic or not, but here's my take on how to make Involtini di Melanzane.
Start off by slicing the eggplants lengthwise into thin slices. Sprinkle salt on both sides of the eggplant slices and place them into a colander. Allow the eggplant slices to sit for about an hour or so. This is done so that we can get as much water out of the eggplants as possible. After about an hour, rinse off the excess salt and pat it dry with a paper towel.
Heat up some oil in a pan. Once the oil is hot, place a couple of eggplant slices into the pan. Be really careful when you do this, cos it will splatter! Also remember not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until the eggplant slices becomes soft and golden brown on both sides.
Remove the eggplant slices from the pan and place them onto some paper towels. This is done so that we can get as much oil out of the eggplant slices as possible. You can put more paper towels on top of the eggplant slices and lightly pat it down too. That will help in removing as much oil as possible. Once you have done that, set the fried eggplant slices aside.
Next, cook up your favorite long pasta. It can be spaghetti, fettuccine, linguine or even angel hair pasta. I used spaghetti and it worked out pretty well. Once your pasta is al dente, drain it and set it aside.
Now it's time to make some pasta sauce. You can just reheat some from a jar or make from scratch using your grandma's favorite pasta sauce recipe. It doesn't really matter. I just reheated some tomato and basil pasta sauce that came in a jar. Once you are done with the pasta sauce, split it into three portions.
Pour the first portion of your pasta sauce into a deep baking dish.
Toss your pasta in the second portion of that pasta sauce and set the third portion of sauce aside. We will use it later on.
Here's when we assemble everything together. Place a slice of eggplant on a flat surface. Scoop up some pasta and place it in the middle of the eggplant slice (just like the photo).
Then, sprinkle on some feta cheese (you could also use mozzarella cheese if you like) onto the pasta. Top if off with a slice of cooked bacon. I used turkey bacon but you can pretty much use any type of bacon that you like. Just make sure that it's not greasy.
Roll up the eggplant and place it on top of the pasta sauce that we placed earlier in the deep baking dish. Make sure that you place the eggplant rolls seam side down, so that it doesn't unravel during cooking.
Once you have finish rolling up all your eggplants, scoop on some pasta sauce (the 3rd portion that we saved earlier) on top of the eggplant rolls. Sprinkle on some Italian herbs, black pepper and it's ready to go into the oven.
Place the baking dish into a 375F preheated oven, uncovered, for about 40 minutes. After 40 minutes or so, remove the baking dish from the oven and sprinkle on some Parmesan cheese before serving. I'm glad I found this recipe cos it was totally delicious. Go ahead, try it and tell me what you think!

Family Buffet King - Bloomfield, NJ

We were in the mood for some Chinese food a couple of weeks ago and decided that we should go for a buffet. Instead of going to our usual Chinese buffet place in Clifton, we decided to try some place new. Who knows, we might find one even better than the one in Clifton. So, I went online to read up reviews about some of the buffet places near our apartment. There were quite a few, but one particular place kind of stood out. According to the reviews, it's really good and affordable. Sounds good to me!
So, we headed out to Bloomfield (just one neighborhood away from us) to check out Family Buffet King. When we initially saw it's address, we were pretty worried about parking. It's on Bloomfield Avenue and since that's the main street of Bloomfield, parking can be a problem sometimes. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find a parking lot (with free parking!) situated just next to it. Yay! When we walked in, we noticed that it was almost full but there wasn't a single Chinese in that Chinese buffet (not counting the owner and servers :P). To me, that's a big oh oh! An authentic Chinese buffet would be filled with Chinese families on a Saturday night.
The servers as well as the owners were really friendly though. They really made we feel very welcomed. While walking in, I noticed that the grill section was out of order. That kinda sucks, cos we were really looking forward to some grilled steaks. I don't know if it was just for that night or if it has been out since forever. Ahhh well, maybe the rest of the food would make up for it. I made the appetizer section my first stop in the buffet line. I was rather disappointed. The selection wasn't really that great. A few different salads, some mussels and rather tiny shrimp. There are a few small trays of sushi rolls, nothing really impressive at all. There were also three different types of soups to choose from and I tried the Hot & Sour soup. A little too starchy but not too bad I guess. Kevin wanted to try the Wonton soup but he soon realized that there were no wontons left in it! So, he didn't take any :(
Disappointing appetizers...what about the main dishes? Well, if you are looking for authentic Chinese food, then you are in the wrong place. However, they have a rather good selection of American Chinese food as well as some American food. You can pretty much find the entire menu of a typical Chinese take out restaurant there. Not too bad if you like American Chinese food. Of course, I was hoping for more authentic stuff, so I wasn't really impressed.
Time for dessert! Now, here is the funny thing. The layout of the dessert section was really weird. The desserts are not grouped together in a special section. You have to walk the entire buffet line to pick out your desserts from various sections. Also, we couldn't find any ice cream in that buffet. That's rather surprising, since ice cream is pretty much a staple in Chinese buffets. The dessert choices were not really huge but I did enjoy the apple strudel though. I guess that was the highlight of my whole evening.
Our total bill came to $26.94. Not too bad at all. Their weekend dinner buffet is $11.59 per person and their regular lunch buffet is even cheaper. I believe it's only $8 or so. That's really affordable for a buffet. However, the food selection was rather disappointing for me. So, if you are looking for a cheap American Chinese style buffet to go to, then this is the place for you. However, if you want to go for a buffet that serves more authentic and higher quality Asian food, then I would give this place a miss.

Hainanese Pork Chop

We bought a huge pack of pork chops the other day and I have been trying out various pork chop recipes from all over. Today, I will attempt to make Hainanese Pork Chops. This is the most popular style of cooking pork chops back in Malaysia. You can pretty much get them at 'Western Food' stalls in hawker centers through out Malaysia. I believe that this recipe was invented by Hainanese chefs back in the day when the British still ruled Malaya. Those chefs did an awesome job in adding in a little bit of Asian influence into a predominantly Western dish. Yes folks, looks like those Hainanese chefs have been dishing out 'fusion food' wayyyy before it became the IN thing :P So, here's my version of the Hainanese Pork Chop.
Before we start on the pork chops, we need to prepare the potatoes that will be served alongside. Peel one extra large potato (you can use two if your potatoes are small) and cut it into wedges. Toss it in oil and sprinkle on some seasoned salt. Then, crack in some black pepper and mix everything together.
Place the wedges on a foil lined baking sheet and pop them into a preheated 375F oven for about 20 mins. Remove the potatoes from the oven and flip them over. Pop them back in for another 20 mins or so and it should be done.
While the potatoes are in the oven, we can start frying up the pork chops. I have pre marinated the pork chops with a mix of Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, a tiny bit of oyster sauce and black pepper for about 24 hours. All you need to do is to fry the pork chops up in a pan until it is cooked through. Then, remove the pork chops from the pan and set them aside.
Now, it's time to work on the sauce. Add in some sliced onions into the pan that we used earlier to fry up the pork chops. Saute them for a little bit.
Then, add in some frozen peas and carrots. Mix them in with the onions.
After about a minute, add in some Worcestershire sauce. Mix it well with the vegetables. The sauce will deglaze the pan and the flavors will be just so delicious.
Then, add is some ketchup. This will further enhance the taste of the sauce.
Mix everything together and allow it to cook. Once it is cooked, add in some corn flour mixed with some chicken stock. This will help thicken up the sauce. Stir it for a bit and once the sauce thickens, it is ready to be serve. Just pour the hot sauce over the pork chops and serve it with the potatoes that we made earlier. You can also serve it up with a side salad. This is really an awesome dish, you should try it!

Eat | Drink | Explore Malaysia Kitchen at Grand Central Terminal

We were super excited when we heard about the Eat | Drink | Explore Malaysia Kitchen event that will be held in Grand Central Station's Vanderbilt Hall. It will be a two day event (Nov 5 & 6, 2010) and it's organized by Malaysia Kitchen for the World. The main purpose of this event is to introduce Malaysia (it's sights, sounds and most importantly, food) to NYC. We missed some of the past events organized by Malaysia Kitchen for the World (Night Market in Chelsea, Night Market under the Manhattan Bridge...etc), but we heard that they were awesome. So, we made sure that we would not miss this event, no matter what.
The event is split into two sessions per day. Lunch starts at 11:30am and it goes on til 2:30pm. The vendors then takes a break and the second session resumes at 4:30pm - 7:00pm for dinner. We arrived at Grand Central Station bright and early on Saturday for lunch. We wanted to get there early to avoid the crowds and stuff. We were glad we did cos by the time we left, the whole hall was just packed to the brim!
This is what part of what the hall looked like. With the bright colored umbrellas and stalls, it somewhat reminded me of the pasar malams (night markets) back home in Malaysia. We were also greeted by lovely smell of freshly cooked Malaysian food...ahhhh pure bliss! :D
As we walked around, we noticed that a lot of the popular Malaysian restaurants in Manhattan as well as Queens and Brooklyn turned up in full force. Among some of the participating restaurants were Bentara, Betel, Cafe Asean, Double Crown, Satay,Taste Good and Spot Dessert Bar. Even the big boys like Nyonya and Laut had stalls set up. This is the best thing ever. We had the chance to actually walk around and compare food from various Malaysian restaurants in the Greater NY area without having to actually travel and visit each one separately.
There are three really popular Malaysian grocery stores in NYC (one in Chinatown and two in Queens). Old Town Asia Market is located in Queens and they too set up stall at the event. They were selling all kinds of Malaysian groceries, from Aik Cheong coffee to various curry mixes. I have extra happy to see my favorite snack on sale....MAMEE!! I am a big fan of MAMEE noodles, I literally grew up eating MAMEE :P It's been a while since I ate a pack of MAMEE, so I just HAD to buy a few packs. I believe they were selling 3 packs for $1. Taking a big bite of MAMEE instantly took me back to my primary school days. I still remember smuggling packets of MAMEE in our uniform pockets and secretly nibbling on it during classes. It was like the coolest thing to do back then.
Apart from stalls selling all kinds of food and groceries, they also had entertainment lined up. There were cooking demonstrations by various chefs and Malaysian personalities. We managed to watch a cooking demonstration by Susheela Rhagavan, the author of the ever popular Flavors of Malaysia cookbook. She also had a book signing session later on that day.
Apart from cooking demonstrations, there were also cultural dance performances by the cultural dance troupe. There were too many people in front of me for me to take any decent pictures of the performance but I managed to slip backstage and took this picture when they were posing for official press photos. I just pretended to be part of the press! :P See, the things I do for this blog.
Alright, now it's time for some food!! We really wanted to sample some of the food from Laut. For those of you who don't know, Laut was recently awarded one Michelin star. It is the first Malaysian restaurant in the whole of US to receive that prestigious award. To receive such a huge culinary honor, they must be really good. So yeah, we were pretty stoked to try their food. They were selling Nasi Lemak that afternoon. We could choose between Chicken Curry ($5), Beef Rendang ($5) or both ($6). We tried both. The Chicken Curry and Beef Rendang came with a serving Nasi Lemak (coconut rice), sambal ikan bilis (anchovies in chili paste) and some cucumber. The Nasi Lemak was rather good but truthfully, it wasn't the best. We tried some of the Nasi Lemak from Nyonya and it was way better than Laut's Nasi Lemak.
We also tried some Mamak Mee ($7) from Satay. The reason why we chose to try the food from Satay was because Satay is located in Flushing, Queens. We wanted to know if the food was good or not. It doesn't make sense for us to go all the way to Flushing to check them out, only to find out that they are not that great. I'm glad that we tried their food. You know why? Well, cos the noodles really wasn't all that great :P LOL! It wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best either. The fried noodles came with some vegetable achat and peanuts.
Apart from all the yummy Malaysian food and entertainment, another good thing about such events is that you get to meet a lot of other Malaysians living in NYC. We managed to make quite a lot of new friends that day. It's always good to meet up with fellow Malaysians, especially when you are so far away from home.
Overall, it was an awesome event! Very well planned out and organized. The best thing that we took away from this event was this booklet. A restaurant guide to all the Malaysian restaurants in the NY tri state area! Not only does it list out the restaurants, complete with address and phone numbers but it also comes with reviews of each of those places. Also, they would point out some of the more popular dishes from each restaurant. I did a quick count and there are over 50 restaurants in the tri state area that serves Malaysian and Malaysian inspired food! Looks like we have to work our way down that list and try to visit each and every one :P So yeah, we had a great time at the 2010 Eat | Drink | Explore Malaysia Kitchen and we will definitely look forward to the next event hosted by Malaysia Kitchen!

New Luggage for the Holiday Season

We were just walking around the city last weekend and we noticed that most of the Christmas lights are already up. Man, it's only mid November and it's already beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the city! We are especially looking forward to this holiday season. As many of you know, my family from Malaysia will be visiting us over the Christmas holidays and we will taking them to visit Washington DC, up to the ski slopes in Vermont as well as Boston for the weekend. Also, we will be going back to Pittsburgh this Thanksgiving to visit Kevin's family next week. So, as you can see, we will be doing quite a lot of traveling over the holidays.

I was going through our luggage yesterday and realized that we need some new luggage for all those upcoming trips. Our current luggage are a bit old and worn. Of course we could go out to the mall to look for new ones but it would mean spending almost all day walking around (and not even sure of getting what we really want). So, we did the smarter thing. We went online to look for luggage!

While surfing around for luggage, we found LuggageOnTheWeb.com. It's an amazing online store that carries all types of luggage. They have everything, from carry ons, duffel bags, garment bags to huge trolley bags. I found three pieces of luggage that I have totally fallen in love with. The first is Vera Wang Mobile Traveler from the Hartmann Luggage line. I feel that it looks rather elegant. Another one that I really love is the Tumi Vapor from Tumi Luggage line. Doesn't it look cool? I also think that the Rimowa Salsa Air from the Rimowa Luggage line is really cool too! I only need one but I really can't decide on which. They are all so nice! Choices choices, which one should I get? What do you guys think?

Boston Market - North Arlington, NJ

It was one of those nights where we felt like eating a nice home cooked meal but didn't really feel like cooking. Sure, there are many nice restaurants out there that serves really good home style cooking but we wanted something quick and affordable :P So, it was off to Boston Market we go.
We have always love the food from Boston Market. We can choose whatever main we want and pick our favorite sides. It feels like Thanksgiving (minus all the hours in the kitchen) everyday! :D When we arrived, we saw a huge poster on the window advertising their 25th Anniversary Specials. Prices start at only $4.99! For $4.99, you get a 1/4 dark meat rotisserie chicken, cornbread and your choice of two sides. I remember them offering three pieces of dark meat chicken for $4.99 earlier this year but 1/4 a chicken is fine too, I guess.
We both decided to go for that special. Kevin ordered the 1/4 dark meat rotisserie chicken with stuffing and mashed potatoes ($4.99). As usual, the mashed potatoes, stuffing and chicken tasted great! However, we were quite surprised at the size of the 1/4 chicken. Look at it..it's tiny!!! Let me note that the plate is just a regular size plate (not some over sized platter), so yeah, the chicken was really really tiny.
I also had the $4.99 special. For my sides, I chose the Creamed Spinach and Mediterranean Green Beans. I found the spinach to be a tad bit too salty but totally loved the green beans. Yummy green beans tossed in garlic butter with roasted red peppers, dill and crunchy almonds. Mmmm mmmm mmmm really yummy. The cornbread was also very very good. Again, the downside was the size of the chicken. I still cannot get over the size of the chicken. Sooo tiny. I guess we would need to order the 3 pieces dark meat chicken the next time around.
We added on two Iced Tea ($1.89 each) to go along with our meal. Overall, it was a good meal. However, the size of the chicken made it little disappointing. Also, I wonder why they changed the promotion from getting 3 pieces of dark meat chicken to only a 1/4 chicken for $4.99. That kinda suxs :( Oh well, with that said, we still love Boston Market. Where else can you get home style cooking (with so many different side choices) for such an affordable price? :D
