Pierogies with Melted Butter & Ham

We love pierogies, oh yes we do! I'm not sure if it's because Kevin is from Pittsburgh or because he is part Polish. Either ways, we both love piegories :D The first time I tried pierogies was at the dining hall in IUP and I have been hooked ever since.

Pierogies are boiled dumplings made with unleavened dough, stuffed with mashed potatoes, cheese and sometimes other ingredients. I do not have a special secret pierogi recipe passed down from many generations to share with you but I will show you how we make it here in the Podany household :P All you need is a box of Mrs. T's pierogies (it comes in many flavors), some leftover ham (can be substituted with bacon or other cured meats), one big onion and butter.

First you need to cook the frozen pierogies in boiling water until it floats. Drain and set aside.

Next, melt some butter, add in the onions and then the ham. Cook until the onions are caramelized.

Then you add in the pierogies. Continue cooking until the pierogies are well coated with melted butter and turn slightly brown.

A nice big plate of pierogies! It's really yummy and it's so easy to make. Try it. Once you have tried it, you would want to make it over and over again! :D

Hehehe, it taste more like ravioli but with a way thicker skin!

Yeah, all kinds of fillings but usually its potato and cheese. Sometimes people add in cabbage, meat, onions, mushrooms or sauerkraut too.

Pierogies can be made as as appetizer, main or dessert. If it's for dessert, then it will have fruit fillings! :D
