Durians in New York City!

Our friend Kheng was visiting us from Vermont over the weekend and she wanted to get her dose of Malaysian food as well as shop for some Malaysian groceries. She said that Burlington doesn't have any Malaysian restaurants and they only have a few Asian groceries stores (mostly small and pathetic Vietnamese stores). Sooooo, we figured the best place to take her would be Chinatown :D There are at least 5 good Malaysian restaurants there as well as a whole lot of Asian grocery stores. In fact, there is also a Malaysian grocery store that carries everything Malaysian, from Milo to Maggi Mee! After buying some groceries, we were on our way back to the PATH station to catch the train back to Jersey. We then saw something familiar among all the other exotic fruits at the roadside fruit stall on the corner of Mulberry and Bayard St.
Yup, they were selling durians! I initially didn't want to buy any (cos I knew they were Thai durians and have been frozen before) but Kevin kept on saying that we should try one. So we did. We asked the old uncle how much were the durians going for and he said $1.50/lbs. Not too bad I guess, I was expecting it to be more expensive. We picked out one and he weighed it. 7 and half, close to 8 lbs! The fruit stall uncle was kind enough to give us a discount, he said that he will sell it to us for $10! Sounds good to me =)
This is the first time I bought a durian that comes with a tag. Check this out. "Superior Quality". I do not know what the Chinese characters say but I am guessing it's the brand? The other side of the tag has a picture of a pig. Hmmm, I wonder why. Weird :P Anyways, we can't wait to open it up to see if it's really "Superior Quality"! LOL!
Now, usually back in Malaysia, we would get the guys at the durian fruit stall to open up the durians and put them in plastic containers for us. Since the fruit stall that we bought this durian wasn't a stall dedicated solely to durians, we had to take the durian back whole. No big deal I guess. While he was living in Malaysia, Kevin has seen how those guys open up a durian many times. He can do it :D I told him that all he needs to do is to cut open the bottom of the durian and I will pry it open. The whole process turned was relatively easy. Just chop chop chop and then pry open (just for the records, Kevin did it all by himself). I really expected it to be a whole lot harder.
There you go. That's what it looks like inside. It doesn't look and smell as great as Malaysian durians, but hey, it's pretty good for something that has been frozen before. The flesh looks firm and thick, mmmmm, can't wait to eat them!

Sooo, what does it taste like? As good as the fresh durians back home in Malaysia? Kevin, our professional durian taster took the first bite. Please excuse the way he eats the durian (with a spoon :P). That's how we eat durians in my family, so he is just following our lead. Hey, eating durians with a spoon is a great idea, you don't have to put up with stinky fingers later on! The first thing we noticed about the durian is that it doesn't smell. It does give out a little bit of smell but it wasn't overpowering, like how fresh Malaysian durians are. That kinda sucks a little, but I guess that's what you can expect from frozen Thai durians. Even though the flesh was quite firm and sweet, it was a bit watery. I am guessing it's also because the durian was frozen during shipping. Overall, I would say that it wasn't really half as bad as I expected it to be. Nothing close to the fresh durians that you can get back home in Malaysia though. However, if you are miles away from home and miss this yummy 'king of fruits', trust me, this is as good as it gets!

Cadbury Wispa Duo Mix Up

* This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of goviral. All opinions are 100% mine.

There is nothing that I enjoy more than taking a bite off a rich and creamy chocolate bar. One bite and it instantly send me to heaven. After that first bite, I would want another and another and another. That's how much I love chocolates. Many people say that girls love chocolates more than guys, but I beg to differ. I know that Kevin loves chocolates as much as I do. In fact, I sometimes think that he loves chocolates even more than me! As much as we love all kinds of chocolates, I would have to say that Cadbury will always remain as my favorite chocolate.

I have been eating Cadbury chocolates for as long as I can remember. It's rich, bubbly and creamy flavors makes it stand out from the rest. Recently, Cadbury launched a new product that is quite ingenious. It's called the Wispa Duo. Well, I wouldn't really call it a new product, because the Wispa has been around for a while. However, the Wispa Duo is a new twist to an old treat. The Wispa Duo is the perfect combination of a right and left bar, in one pack. That's right, you get a twin treat, both left and right, in one pack! Now, the big question remains? Which is left and which is right? Watch the new Wispa Duo advert from Cadbury and solve the problem of having a left bar, where you should have a right one. So, which bar do you prefer? The left or right bar? As for me, I prefer the right bar...because we all know that I am always right ;P

Johnny Rockets - Jersey Garden Mall, NJ

We were out shopping in Jersey Garden Mall on Monday evening and before we knew it, it was already close to 8pm. We decided that we should get some dinner before heading back home. When it comes to food outlets, there isn't really much to choose from in Jersey Garden Mall. There is the food court, Chili's Too, Sbarros, Jeepers, Johnny Rockets and the brand new IHOP, located across the street. Since there wasn't a line in Johnny Rockets (there is ALWAYS a long line in Johnny Rockets), we figured we should just eat there.
Johnny Rockets is an international chain that oozes that feel good Americana charm. Stepping into a Johnny Rockets makes you feel like you are stepping into an all American diner back in the 50's, with checkered floors and table top jukeboxes. Even the uniform of the servers brings you back to the time when milkshakes cost only 5 cents!
Since it wasn't full that day, we had a choice to either sit up front by the counter or in one of the booths. We chose the booths (yes, we are anti social people :P). The servers were really friendly and even offered to take our photo for us! Check out the cool looking table top jukebox and classic diner style straw dispenser.
The menu is exactly what you would expect from a place like this. All kinds of juicy burgers, classic sandwiches and melts to hand dipped milkshakes, malts and floats. Mmm mmm mmmmmm, this is American food at it's best. Our server took our drinks order while we were looking at the menu. I ordered the Root Beer Float ($2.99) and Kevin got the Original Strawberry Milkshake ($4.29). When our drinks arrived, we knew that it was the start of a very good meal. Both the drinks were just super yummy! I can't really explain it, but my Root Beer was made just right. With the correct amount of froth and stuff. Sooo good! Kevin's milkshake was really thick and gyummy too. You see the silver shaker thing by the side of the milkshake? It was half filled with the leftover strawberry milkshake, which you could top up after you are done with the one in your glass. I think there is enough milkshake for two people! Really worth the money.
Kevin ordered the Smoke House Double Burger ($8.99). Two juicy patties with cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, onion rings and Johnny Rockets Smoke House BBQ Ranch sauce. Doesn't it look good? Kevin said that it was really juicy and yummy. It's pretty big too (so big til he couldn't even finish the burger). Good choice Kevin!
I got the Route 66 Burger ($7.49). This is what I would order everytime I go to a Johnny Rockets. It's really good! Two patties with melted Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, onions and mayo...all packed into a yummy bun. Mmmm mmmm good!
Both of our burgers come with fries, However, when our server first brought out our burger, he told us that our fries should be coming out shortly. Half way through our burger, he came over again and apologized, saying that he had already reminded the the kitchen and it should be out soon. We weren't actually complaining, since the burgers were so good, we were too busy eating to even worry about our fries. We could see our server getting more and more flustered as he kept on reminding the kitchen about our fries...hahaha! Anyways, to cut the long story short, he came back and said that he felt really bad to keep us waiting and he told his manager about this. His manager agreed to give us a 20% discount on our meal, cos we had to wait for our fries! Wow! We were not even bothered that our fries did not come out together with our burger, but I guess it bothered our server enough to go ask for a discount, on behalf of us. So yeah, we got a 20% discount off our meal! :D Overall, I would say that Johnny Rockets totally rocked! Cool decor, yummy food and awesome staff!! Two thumbs up!

The Celebrity Apprentice Snapple

I don't know how many of you follow reality shows, but Kevin and I are huge reality show fans. Apart from the Amazing Race, The Apprentice comes in a close second. The past Celebrity Apprentice was one of my all time favorites, with the celebrities raising so much money for their charities and also the drama of Bret falling sick (and wondering if he would make it for the finale). When Trump revealed their final task, I was so excited. You see, both Kevin and I loveeee Snapple (it's our fav drink!) and the celebrities were given the task to create a new flavor for Snapple as well as design the packaging and shoot a commercial for Snapple. Then, both the flavors would be on sale to the American public and portions of the sale will go to their charity.
So, after the finale, we went all over to search for the Celebrity Apprentice Snapple but we couldn't find any. Then, a few weeks ago, we started to see Holly's Snapple pop up at various shops but we still couldn't find Brets. At last we found both Holly and Bret's Snapple (there were only a few cases of Brets on display, tucked away in some corner) in Shoprite a few days ago and we decided to give it a taste test. We all know by now that Bret won the Celebrity Apprentice, but was his Snapple really the better tasting one?
Before we get into the taste test, let's take look at the packaging (since that is part of the task too!). Unlike the regular Snapple products, both Holly and Bret's Snapple had dark colored labels. The Snapple executives were right when they said that it was a bad move, on the celebrities part to choose such dark colors. When you look at the bottles on the supermarket shelves, together with the other Snapple flavors, it really doesn't stand out at all. It just sort of blends into the background. Now, what about the name of the product? Bret's diet Snapple is called "Trop A Rocka". I guess it's becos his used a blend of tropical fruits, hence "Trop" and he also wanted to keep to the rock n roll theme that he was going for. Not too bad of a name, but it isn't really all that. Also, I noticed that there is only a small logo of his charity on one side of the packaging and he focused mainly on him endorsing the drink, rather than the charity. It's more like this is a Bret Michaels creation. Holly's Snapple on the other hand had a really smart name. It's called "Compassionberry Tea", since it was a blend of Passionfruit, Strawberry and the compassionate care that her charity has for autistic children. Very smart name. Also, you can see from her packaging that it was all about her charity. The charity name (Hollyrod Foundation) is plastered in front of the package and there is even a short write up about her charity and what they do on the side panel. So, in terms of color, packaging and name choice, I would say that Holly wins!
Now, the taste test. First up is Holly Robinson Peete's Compassionberry Tea. It was really fun to watch the episode where they had a chance to go to Snapples taste lab and choose flavors for their creation. I feel that Holly made the right choice to fight for Passionfruit (Bret also wanted passionfruit but gave that up to Holly). When you first open the bottle, you can already smell the fragrant smell of passionfruit. Upon tasting, I felt that it was a tad bit too sweet and the taste of strawberry can be a little bit overpowering at times. I only wish they had gone slow with the strawberry and added in a little bit more passionfruit. Do not get me wrong, it wasn't bad. Just that, it wasn't really the greatest as well. However, with that said, I still can see myself drinking this. So, good job Holly.

I was a little bit excited to try Bret's Trop A Rocka because he is the Celebrity Apprentice winner and this is the winning Snapple flavor. I also kept in mind that this is diet Snapple, so it is going to be a little bit more diluted tasting and not as sweet. When I first opened the bottle, there was this really weird smell that I couldn't really place. I was thinking to myself, coconut? It was really weird. I then drank a big mouthful and all I could say was "OMG! This won???" Let me just say it straight up. It's horrible! When it first hits your mouth, you do get a little taste of the mango and pear blend (which I feel isn't really that great of a combination). However, that taste doesn't last long at all. The tropical fruit blend fades away and this horrible tasting, somewhat spicy tasting thing take over. It just hits you hard. That's the same horrible smell that hit me when I opened the bottle. I really couldn't place that taste but once Kevin tried it, he told me it was cinnamon! Yes! That's it! Cinnamon! Wayyy wayyy wayyyy too much cinnamon. It just made the whole drink taste awful! I thought that Curtis and Maria was just faking it when they said that it tasted horrible but I guess they were not. It is bad! Very bad. Now I understand why we couldn't find many of Bret's Snapple on sale. I guess Snapple also knew that it wouldn't sell well and only made limited amounts.

So, in conclusion, I feel that if the choice of who wins Celebrity Apprentice is based solely on this Snapple task, Holly should have won hands down. Not only was her packaging better, her choice of name for her creation and taste was also better. I do not want to be mean, but if Bret didn't get that brain hemorrhage and fought to come back for the finale, would he still have won? I seriously don't think so. Therefore, in my eyes, Holly is the Celebrity Apprentice. That title was robbed from her, just for TV ratings. I think it takes no genius to figure that out. Now, will you please excuse me. I am going to get myself another bottle of Compassionberry Tea =)

Let the flowers do the talking!

Flowers. Who doesn't like flowers? There is just something about flowers that just brightens up your day. It might be the beautiful bright colors, the wonderful smell or maybe a mixture of both, but either ways, receiving flowers from someone that cares never fails to put a big smile on your face. Flowers really makes good gifts. You can send flowers to someone to celebrate their birthday, to your significant other on your anniversary, to cheer friends up when they are down, to show mom that you care on Mother's Day, to friends and relatives who are not feeling well and maybe even to that secret crush of yours, just to tell her that you are thinking about her. It's always easier to show someone that you care when you let the flowers do the talking. You know, sometimes you don't even need a reason to send flowers. Trust me, everybody loves it when they have that flower delivery, waiting for them at their door. The one person that we always love sending flowers to is my mother in law. She lives in Pittsburgh, so we do not get to see her often. Therefore, we always make it a point to send her flowers on her birthday, Mother's Day, Valentines Day and sometimes, even for no particular reason at all. We know that receiving flowers never fails to brighten her day and it also helps reminds her that even though we are miles away, we are still always thinking of her.

So, the next time you are thinking of someone or when a special occasion is coming up and you would like to show that special someone that you care, buy them flowers. That's right. A bouquet from 1-800-Flowers is just the thing to do the trick! Just visit http://www.1800flowers.com/ and order flowers for that special someone today. Marmalade Glazed Pork Chops

I found some nice looking pork chops on sale at our local grocery store the other day. Instead of cooking up those pork chops the way that I usually would, I thought that I would search the Internet for something new to try. I came upon quite a few "Marmalade Glazed Pork Chops" recipes, so I decided to combine all of them together and came up with this. It turned out to be really yummy, so I figured I should share it with all of you.
Start off by marinating the pork chops. I just sprinkled on some Lawry's Seasoned Salt on the chops and placed them in a Ziploc bag to marinade overnight. If you don't really have time, you can just marinade them for about an hour or two. It should work too. The next step is to brown the chops. All you need to do is pan fry the chops on high heat in a frying pan for a bit. You do not need to cook through, we just need to give them some color.
While the pork chops are browning in the frying pan, line a baking dish with some orange slices.
Once the pork chops are nicely browned, place them in the baking dish, on top of the orange slices. At this point, the pork chops should look nice and brown on the outside but is still raw/semi raw in the inside. Set it aside and return to the frying pan.
Now it's time to deglaze the pan. We want to save all the caramelized yummy stuff that is stuck on the pan when we were browning the pork chops. Just pour in some orange juice into the pan. I can't really tell you how much OJ I used cause I just eyeballed it. Just enough to deglaze the pan.
Stir the orange juice with a spatula, making sure that you get all the caramelized stuff off the pan.
Then, add in a few big tablespoons of marmalade. Stir in the marmalade and allow it to cook for a little. Once it starts to get bubbly, turn off the heat and your glaze is done.
Once the glaze is done, it's time to put everything together. Just spread on the glaze onto pork chops that is already in the baking dish. If you like, you can pour in some orange juice into the bottom of the pan. This is to help give moisture when it's baking in the oven, so that the pork chops will remain nice and juicy.
Cover the baking dish with aluminium foil and pop it into a 350F preheated oven for about 40 minutes. Certain ovens might take longer while some might take shorter. You would just have to check every once in a while, after it has been in the oven for over half an hour.
There you go! The piping hot and juicy Marmalade Glazed Pork Chops, freshly out from the oven. Since orange and pork goes pretty well with Oriental side dishes, I served the pork chops with some flavored rice and some stir fried baby bok choi. Another yummy, quick and hassle free dinner for the Podanys!

The Frying Pan Bar & Grill - Chelsea, NYC

When Chai Yuet and her friend Kheng Leng visited NYC over the Memorial Day weekend, we knew that we had to bring them to go check out and have dinner at one of our favorite bars in the city. Located on Pier 66 (just 3 blocks north of Chelsea Piers), The Frying Pan is definitely the place to be if you want to catch the sunset over the Hudson, while kicking back with a Corona or Sangria in hand. What's so cool about The Frying Pan anyways? Well, apart from the awesome views and sunsets, there is quite a history behind this lightship. Built in 1929, The Frying Pan is a historic lightship that was salvaged after spending 3 years at the bottom of Chesapeake Bay. It was then brought to Chelsea Piers and it has become a bar ever since. The Frying Pan is docked to Pier 66 (which is actually an old railroad barge) and it's neighbor, the the John J. Harvey fireboat is docked beside it. There is also a caboose right in the middle of Pier 66.
The Frying Pan is open everyday starting from May up til October (or when it starts to get cold). They start serving drinks at noon and they stay open all the way til midnight. The best time to go would be just before sunset but be warned, it gets really packed during the weekends. So, you might want to get there early if you want a table and/or seat. Oh, and they do card after 6pm or so. Yeah, that's right. You must be above 21 to enter.
Ahhh, there you go. This is the Frying Pan. As you can see, you are allowed to go on board and just chill anywhere. The engine room is also open for you to check out. Also, when the sun goes down, the Frying Pan starts to heat up. There is a dance floor inside this lightship!
Look at the amount of people there that day. I believe it was so packed because it was the Memorial Day weekend as well as Fleet Week in NYC. The whole of Pier 66 was just packed with people (both on the bottom and top floors!). It can get pretty wild with all the 'frat boy partying' at times, especially on weekends and holidays. Oh, check out the background of this pic. You can also see part the John J. Harvey fireboat in the background. Occasionally, there will be a water salute coming from the fireboat.
We were really lucky to get to seat down, let alone a table to ourselves that day. Can you see the stage behidn us? It was so packed until they had to set up tables on the stage! There would be live bands performing on stage during lunchtime as well as later on in the day.
So, hows the food and drinks there? Well, the food served there is your typical bar food but I would say that the taste is above bar food standards. Everything is self serve at the Frying Pan. What you would do is go up to the bar to order your food, pay and you would be given a ticket with a number. Then you just have to wait until your number is called, then you can go pick up your food and drinks. They accept both cash and credit cards but on the day that we were there, their credit card machine was down. So, we had to pay cash. For those of you who do not like to carry around much cash, there is also an ATM machine in the bar itself.
I ordered the Lemon Herb Chicken Breast Wrap ($9.23). The chicken was very nicely marinated and juicy. It came with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, tzatziki, some greens, all wrapped up in a grilled flatbread. It also came with a nice side salad. A really refreshing dish on a hot summers day. Kevin and Kheng Leng got the Grilled 8oz Sirloin Burger ($9.22). Kevin said that it was really good. Heck, even I can see that it was good, with yummy juices flowing out each time he took a bite :P The burgers was served on a sesame seed brioche roll with cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and pickles. You can add on bacon, avocado or mushrooms for an additional $1.84 each. The two best sellers at The Frying Pan when it comes to drinks is their White Sangria ($35 per pitcher....I think) and their Corona buckets ($35 per bucket). The sangria was really refreshing, all loaded up with fruits. Definitely my choice of beverage on a super hot summers day. The Corona bucket is a really good deal too. 5 bottles of Corona for $35. It also comes with a small cup of lime wedges. Kheng Leng also bought all of us a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea (I do not know the price) to share. However, Kevin said that it tasted a little bit watered down. I think I kinda agree with him. We polished off the whole pitcher and we didn't even get a buzz. Definitely watered down.
Ahhh, this is the reason why most people come to The Frying Pan. Check out the view. You can get a superb view of the Manhattan skyline from almost any part of the bar. Also, it's pretty near the ever so busy West 30th St Heliport. So, you can check out all the different types of helicopters that are heading towards or leaving the heliport.
Now, this is what everybody is waiting for. The highlight of the evening. It was such an amazing feeling to just sit back, relax and watch the sun set over the Hudson River. The gentle breeze, the slight swaying of the boats, an icy cold Corona in hand...if not for the New Jersey skyline, you would sometimes even forget that you are smacked right in the middle of Manhattan.

We had a great time hanging out with Chai Yuet and Kheng Leng at The Frying Pan. So, the next time you are visiting Manhattan or if you are looking to get away from the crazy city life for a couple of hours, head over to The Frying Pan and get yourself a bucket of Corona. Hey, you might even see us there! :P

Mamak Mee Goreng (Indian Fried Noodles)

I had a packet of yellow noodles and some fried tofu sitting in my refrigerator a while back, so I decided to try and cook up some Mamak Mee Goreng aka Indian Fried Noodles. Despite it's name, this dish didn't actually originate from India. It was created by the mamak (Tamil Muslims) community who migrated from South India to Malaysia (and other South East Asian countries) centuries ago. Sold mainly in mamak stalls all across Malaysia, the Mamak Mee Goreng has since become a favorite among Malaysians of all races. Here is my version of the Mamak Mee Goreng.
Start off by adding some oil into a wok or large pan. Once it's hot, add in some chopped garlic. Saute the garlic for a bit and when it starts to turn light brown, add in some chili paste. I have only added in a little because we are not really fans of super hot stuff. You can add in a little bit more, if you like.
Next, add in some fried tofu (taukua) that has been cut up into smaller pieces. You can easily find fried tofu in any Asian grocery store. If there are no Asian grocery stores near you, you might be able to find some in the produce section of your local grocery store. They should be by the chilled organic foods section.
After the fried tofu, add in some potatoes that have been boiled and cut up into smaller pieces. Then, in goes some tomatoes (that has also been cut up into smaller chunks). At this point, you can add in some mustard greens (sawi) is you like.
Stir everything together and allow it to cook for a bit. Then, add in some large white shrimp that has been peeled and clean. Apart from shrimp, you can also add in some squid that has been cut into rings.
Once the shrimp is almost cooked, throw in about a handful of yellow noodles.
Then, pour in some sauce to add flavor and color to the noodles. It's pretty easy to prepare the sauce. Just add 1 tablespoon of soy sauce to 1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce and 3 tablespoons of tomato ketchup. Then, add in some sugar and mix it all together.
Just stir fry everything together for a bit and it's ready to serve! At this point, you might want to add in some beansprouts. Since I didn't have any in hand, I just made do without. If you added in some beansprouts, just stir fry for a little bit longer and you are done. Remember, everything must be fried in really high heat. If not, it won't taste that authentic.
Now, if you would like to add in an egg to your noodles, this is what you should do. Make a hole in the middle of the noodles and add in a tiny bit of oil. Then, crack in one large egg and allow it to cook for a few seconds. Then, break the egg up and scramble it a little. Once its almost cooked, mix it with the rest of the noodles and stir fry everything together. Then it's ready to serve! You can serve the noodles with a few wedges of lime and some fried onions on top. Some people would also sprinkle on some fresh shredded lettuce on top. It's entirely up to you. Enjoy!
